Global Search

TL;DR

This is a web only release to allow instructors and administrators to search for specific information across instructors and students. The global search, available on every page on the web app, can be done for names, phone numbers or email addresses or part thereof and can be limited to active students or all students.

Global Search - How do I access it?

Global search can be accessed by clicking on the icon in the top left corner of the web app or by pressing Ctrl + K. The global search box can be dismissed by clicking on the same icon, clicking anywhere outside the box or pressing Esc. The search box will also display the most recent results which have been acted upon.

Global Search - What can I search for?

You can search for anything in a name, a phone number or an email address e.g., 'Frank', '710326' or 'k86@gm' will find any instructors or students who match that criteria. The minimum number of characters required for a search is 3.

The results will be presented below the search criteria separated into Students and Instructors and each entry shown can be clicked to go to that person. If the match is not in the name, the matching entry will be shown as well.

So, for example, if the text typed matches with an email address, it will show the email address alongside the name, regardless of whether the name contains the requested characters. Hence, Charlie Kidd is displayed because the email address matches the required search and the email address is shown to clarify that. The other two students are shown because their names fit the criteria. Likewise, if the matching criteria is in a phone number, the number will be shown alongside the name.

Finally, if you wish to include inactive students or instructors in your search, you can change the toggle to do so. Any matching entries that are Inactive will be shown as such.
